Mission

Baccalaureate Mass 2024

“I have found that it is specifically within this faith community that I have discerned the closest thing to authentic friendship that I know…Just as it is my goal to grow in holiness, I want that for my friend, my brother or sister in Christ. And what’s more, I can be confident that this is also what my friend wants for me.” – Hugh Cairney, B.S. ’24

For over 80 years Calvert House has been the Catholic home for the University of Chicago.  Like most Newman Centers, our mission is to bring the secular university deeper into relationship with Christ and wider with the universal Church. Calvert House builds up the Body of Christ by providing our community with the sacraments, with prayer and worship opportunities, with spiritual and intellectual formation, and with opportunities for service, evangelization, and leadership. We are here to serve everyone, from curious freshman “nones”, to cradle Catholic nuns—students, scholars, and religious from around the world.

Receive

The Holy Spirit is at work in Calvert House. We celebrate weekday daily mass and two masses on Sundays; Wednesday evenings we celebrate Holy Hour, with Adoration and Reconciliation. The community receives the Body of Christ not only in the Eucharist, but in His Church, for “Where two or three are gathered in my name, there I am in their midst.” (Mt. 18:20).
Thousands of University of Chicago alumni have passed through the Calvert House doors. Hundreds of them were baptized here, and many more hundred confirmed. Calvert House is where conversions happen, where religious and lay vocations are discerned, and where the Catholic leaders of tomorrow meet their spouses. Lifelong friendships, and lifelong commitments to the faith are established in these formative years.

Give

Our students at the University of Chicago are poised to become leaders in the faith and in the Church. They start here at Calvert.
Not only does Calvert House provide formation and fellowship, but a home away from home—a space where students can pray, study, serve, and dine together. We are a unique hub for Catholic activities on campus, where students can discern their unique gifts and begin to give back to the community. Calvert House supports the following Catholic student and partner organizations:
Volunteering at the Mission of Our Lady of the Angels
The Catholic Students Association (CSA)
CSA Grad
Calvert House Choir
Students for Life
Cana Journal
Lumen Christi Institute
Food Run Project
The Veritas Forum
Catholics at Booth
St. Thomas More Society
Law Students for Life
Coming together as the Church, we seek the encounter with God that sets our course and enables us to approach our studies and our campus community with the light of Christ and the grace of the Holy Spirit.
